I'm not sure if you all saw the little flyer in the folders today but myself (Kendal) and a few other sisters are wishing to start a Relief Society outside group that will be dedicated to providing service to those in our community. Hence, Service Group.
We will be having our first meeting on Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at 7:15p.m. (I know it's an odd time but I have to pick up my husband at 6:30p.m. from work at sometimes he's a little late getting out so 7:15p.m. should be good.)
At this first meeting we will be discussing what are goals will be be and what service we can provide to the community. ALL ARE WELCOME!!

January 18th: Back to Basics Quilting Quarterly Activity at 7p.m. at Amy Lehto's home. Please bring any fabric scraps you may have. There will be some recipes there and food tasting of things you can make from the wheat in your food storage.

Chapter 1: Living What We Believe
Our lesson on Sunday, January 8th was from "The Teachings of George Albert Smith" chapter 1. Sister Elizabeth Roberts did a wonderful job teaching from this chapter and helping us as sisters focus back on our duty as members of this church.
President Smith at the age of 34 made a "personal creed" that included 11 ideals that he was committed to live by. He committed to help those in need, to be a friend to the friendless, to not be an enemy to others, to overcome the tendency to be selfish and jealous, to not seek to force people to live up to his ideals, along with many others. President Smith's 11th creed was, "knowing that the Redeemer of mankind has offered the world the only plan that will fully develop us and make us really happy here and hereafter, I feel it not only a duty but also a blessed privilege to disseminate this truth."
How true is this last creed! We as members of the church have the duty and responsibility to understand and live our lives the way our Heavenly Father and Savior Jesus Christ wants us to. What does being a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints mean to you? Some of the comments in our class where that it's all about work. Being a member of this gospel is not a passive thing. We are constantly engaged in a good work. This goes not only for our callings and service in the church but in our daily lives with continuing to study the scriptures, serving others, strengthening our families, and striving to live as the Savior did and making sure to repent when we make mistakes. Sister Cleo Miller explained that being a member means that we will be blessed in many ways but we also have many responsibilities. Sister Amy Lehto and Victoria Stuckey explained how we receive blessings each day but these blessings can help motivate us to continue on the right path to gain or qualify for those greater blessings in the eternities.
As members, our obedience to the gospel (not just our Church membership) is what truly qualifies us to be called Saints. President Smith said, "I would like to say to the Latter-Day Saints, if we are worthy to be called Latter-Day Saints, it will be because we are living the lives of saints and it is the purpose of the Gospel to qualify us in that way." In Matthew chapter 7 in verse 24 we read the parable of the wise man and the foolish man. We know that the wise man's home did not wash away due to the flood because he built his house upon a rock. If we are obedient and build each of our lives upon the rock of our Redeemer we will be blessed and be worthy to be called a Latter-Day Saint.
Some questions to think on, "How many of us, learning the will of the Father, are doing it? How many of us day by day are laying a foundation and building a structure that shall conform to the dignity of the stature of our Master? We will not be judged as our brothers and sisters of the world are judged, but according to the greater opportunities placed in our keeping. (pg. 5)"
I urge each sister to reflect on their lives. Are we as members of the true church upon this earth living our daily lives in a way that reflects that membership? Are we showing forth our continence of the light of the Savior and the joy we find in being obedient to His commandments? I pray that we each (especially at the beginning of a new year) can keep our lives in check and really make sure that we are preparing now to meet the Savior. Don't be like the foolish man or the man who did not wear the proper wedding garment to the service in the parable in Matthew chapter 22. Be prepared and you will not fear!
A final quote, "We cannot live like the world and expect to obtain our rightful place in the Kingdom. The Lord tells us in the first section of the Doctrine and Covenants, referring to evil: that he cannot look upon sin with the least degree of allowance [see Doc & Cov. 1:31]. The Lord will be merciful, but he will be just, and if we want any blessing there is only one way we may obtain it, and that is to keep the commandments that will entitle us to the blessing (pg. 7)."
Sister Roberts passed our some bookmarks where each of us could write down at least five creeds that we wish to live by. Take a moment to think of things that you wish to be or do that will draw you closer to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ and that express how you wish to live what your believe.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
WOW! Can you believe it's already 2012? (twenty twelve or two thousand twelve which ever is your fancy) This year is going to be great. We have some many wonderful ideas and plans for the Tallahassee 1st Ward Relief Society. It's super exciting. Just a reminder to PLEASE get your visiting teaching report for December into your supervisors. If you think your companion may have told them just send a report anyway just to be sure.
Also, Sister Sharon Pitts is currently recovering from surgery and is doing well. She is at TMH in the rehab center and is in Room 1124. I know she would love to have anyone come and visit her and see how she's doing.
Sister Sandy Taylor is doing really well after her double knee replacement. She was able to make it out to church this past Sunday and she is moving along just wonderfully.
As mentioned in the last post, the first Sunday lessons will be coming out of the "Daughters in My Kingdom" book that has been put together and released by the Relief Society General Presidency. If you have not received one yet we currently have placed an order for more and hopefully they should be here soon. At least hopefully before the first Sunday in February.
Sister Clark gave a wonderful lesson this past Sunday on chapters one and two. Within chapter one, it explains how the Relief Society was restored after an ancient pattern. Even though we do not have documentation that there was a society such as one today back in New Testament times, we know that there were countless women, named and unnamed who were disciples of Jesus Christ. For example, we have the account of Mary and Martha in Luke 10. Martha opened her home to Jesus and she served the Lord by taking care of his temporal needs, while Mary "sat at the Master's feet and absorbed His teachings (pg. 4)."
During the Latter Days we have examples of disciples as well. "The women in the ancient Church were dignified and noble, needed and valued. They served others, increased in personal holiness, and participated in the great work of saving souls (pg. 7)." These same patterns that were set by the women of ancient times have been restored again through the organizing of the Relief Society. President Joseph F. Smith said, "This organization is divinely made, divinely authorized, divinely instituted, divinely ordained of God to minister for the salvation of the souls of women and of men (pg. 7)." Sister Julie B. Beck our current General Relief Society President said, " Through Relief Society we practice being disciples of Christ. We learn what He would have us learn, we do what He would have us do, and we become what He would have us become (pg. 7)."
On March 17, 1842, a group of twenty women met under the direction of Joseph Smith and Elders John Taylor and Willard Richards. They organized and patterned this organization not have the prevalent and popular women's organizations of the time but it was divinely inspired and authorized but the Prophet Joseph Smith. What is so wonderful about the Relief Society is it is patterned after the priesthood. This is not just some charity organization this is an organization ordained by God. It is patterned after the priesthood in that we have a president and counselors in each ward or branch, a president and counselors at the stake level and at the top a General Relief Society presidency. We work with the priesthood holders in our wards and branches. Relief Society participates in ward and branch councils to help communicate the needs of the members.
Joseph Smith taught principles that helped Relief Society sisters "relieve the poor" and "save souls" foundational principles upon which the society was built (pg. 17). Ever since those early meetings of sisters until today, we have applied the Prophet Joseph Smith's teachings in our efforts to increase faith and personal righteousness, strengthening families and homes, and seeking out that helping those in need. My favorite quote in these two chapters is by Sister Lucy Mack Smith, "We much cherish one another, watch over one another, comfort one another and gain instruction, that we may all sit down in heaven together."
I know that the Relief Society is an organization that is divinely restored upon the earth once again. The fullness of the gospel upon the earth in these latter days was not complete without the Relief Society. We as the women of this church have a higher call to increase our personal faith and righteousness, to strengthen our homes and families, and to seek out those in need in our ward families and in our communities. I pray that each of us can find ways to be like the sisters of the early times of the latter days and those women who were disciplines of Christ during his ministry. We have a divine role upon this earth, something that no man can do. Let us stand up and call down the help and spirit of the Lord to assist us in this holy work. Please read this book, do not just let it sit on the table or on the book shelf or just sit in your church bag. Read, study, and ponder its teachings. I know if you do, you will gain a stronger testimony of the Relief Society and of the Restoration of the Gospel.

Few reminders and updates
Hello Sisters!
I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas filled with love and family. I can't believe that tomorrow is 2012! That just blows my mind. However, 2012 in 1st Ward Relief Society is going to be AWESOME. Lots of ideas and new things to come.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE REMEMBER THAT CHURCH STARTS AT 9A.M. TOMORROW AND FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR!!!
In addition, Fast Sunday will NOT be tomorrow but will be next Sunday, January 8th. However, seeing as it is the first Sunday of the month the lesson will be taught by Sister Kathy Clark and it's on Chapters one and two of the "Daughters in my Kingdom" book that I hope all of you have received. If you have not received one of these books please let one of the presidency members know and we'll get one to you. This year on the first Sunday of each month a member of the 1st Ward Relief Society Presidency will be teaching a lesson out of these books. The lessons will not go in order so please be attentive to the updates of what lesson we will be hearing.
Also, if you have not received "The Teachings of George Albert Smith" book please let us know. Our second and third Sunday lessons will be coming from this book.
Finally, if you have not heard but are still interested in reading the book that is for the book club it is called Redwall by Brian Jacques. The next meeting will be on January 19th at 8p.m. More details to come but you still have 19 days to read. I have started it and it is a fast and fun read. If you love fantasy books like me you'll enjoy this one.

A Few Items to Consider...
Please keep the Stuckey family in your prayers. Shawnee broke her leg last Wednesday and had surgery to fix it. She is in Rm. 612 at TMH. Hopefully, she will get to come home before Christmas.
Sister Sheralyn King is holding a garage sale tomorrow (December 17th) from 8 to1 at her home at 3624 Westmoreland Drive, 32303. She is a delightful sister who has not been able to come to church for sometime because her husband has chronic health issues. She is doing this sale along with a neighbor, but look for a lady wearing a Santa hat. If you go, she asked that introduce yourself to her.
